Abiathar. אֶבְיָתָר (Evyatar / Abiathar)
Meaning: "My father is abundance" or "Father of abundance." Contraction of H1 and H3498; father of abundance (i.e., generous); Ebiathar, an Israelite:
Biblical Context: Abiathar was a priest during the reign of David. Son of Ahimelech, the priest of Nob, Abiathar escaped when Saul ordered the priests to be killed (1 Samuel 22:20). He joined David in his flight and remained faithful during his reign, but later supported David's son, Adonijah, in his attempt to seize the throne.
For this, Solomon removed him from the priesthood, thus fulfilling the prophecy against the house of Eli (1 Kings 2:27). He was the last priest of Eli's line to exercise priestly functions. |
